“Gardening in this area surely is different.” This is a common statement made by gardeners who have moved to our area from other parts of the country. it is important to understand the correct timing in planting a garden here in Northwest Florida. Sometimes people fail in their effort to grow vegetables simply because they are attempting to grow a vegetable variety that performs poorly in our climate. Growing a garden in our sandy soils can be challenging. The pest pressure in Florida is greater as compared to many other regions in the country. The Spring into Vegetable Gardening series is designed to take the guesswork out of gardening here in Florida’s Panhandle.

UF/IFAS Extension Agents will provide the following topics as part of this vegetable gardening workshop series:

  • January 14 – Homeowner Vegetable Garden Expectations: what to grow and seasonal information, site selection and improving soils
  • January 21 – Growing Tomatoes, Peppers, Squash and Cucumbers; Seeding and Transplanting Basics
  • January 28 – General Garden Maintenance: watering, fertilizing, integrated pest management
  • February 4 – Harvesting, Troubleshooting Vegetable Garden Problems

Classes will be held at the UF/IFAS Extension Office in Okaloosa County. The office is located at 3098 Airport Road in Crestview.
